Chapter 10

Once the decision was made, Tom couldn’t wait to speak with Derek. I would have been easier if all this happened on a weekend, but life happened when it happened. He checked in with Jake to make sure that Derek wasn’t out of town this week. He didn’t relish having to drive wherever Derek was, but he was in luck. Derek was working out of Fairview this week.

As Tom waited in his cruiser for Derek to get home, he thought about that phone call to Jake. He knew that Jake wanted to know his decision, but he wasn’t telling anyone until he talked to Derek. He had made too many decisions without Derek’s input in the past to continue to do that. He needed to know what Derek wanted.

Tom had been a bundle of nerves, but when Derek’s car pulled next to his in the driveway, his nerves evened out. He had always been like that. He would be a bundle of nerves while he waited, but when it was time to act, he was rock solid.

Derek looked weary when he looked over at the cruiser and Tom was sorry for that. He was sorry for a lot of things.

“Hey, Tom, what’s up?”

Tom walked around the car and pulled Derek into his arms. Derek made a whooshing sound followed by a slight squeak. When Tom’s mouth pressed on his, Derek remained stiff for a moment. Then he just melted. Tom plundered. Their tongues twined and rubbed. Tom vaguely registered the sound of Derek’s keys hitting the ground.

They finally broke the kiss, gasping. Then Derek looked around, “What are you doing? Someone might see.”

“Let them see,” Tom said. “If we are going to be together, we are not going to hide.”

Derek took a step back. “What do you mean, be together?”

Tom cupped his face, noting Derek’s shock and confusion. “I was a dick. I hope you’ll forgive me in time.”

Derek’s face softened. “You already were forgiven. You are best friend. I love you.”

Tom knew that Derek didn’t mean that in the romantic sense, but still, his heart jumped at the words. “Can we go inside?” At Derek’s hesitation, he added, “Just to talk. I think that we need to decide together exactly what we want to do. We both made assumptions about us and I don’t know that either of us really checked in with what we were really feeling.” Suddenly Tom felt stupid, “Geez, I sound like such a chick,” he muttered.

Derek laughed. “All right, love. Let’s go inside and talk.”

Tom stepped away looked back over his shoulder. He saw a brief reflection of something across the street and stopped to get a better look. Derek leaned down to pick up the keys he had dropped.

Tom figured out what he was seeing, but it was already too late. Just as he started to shout, the sound of the bullet reached his ears. Derek was on his way up when his head was jerked back by the force of the bullet.
